Trefoils when poorly drawn can resemble crosses crosslet. These are the Moores who settled, among other places, in Appleby Parva in Leicestershire, which you mention. I have a compiled descent of both those Moore families if you don't. Your blog appears to be a number of years old, so I hope this reaches you. Thirty years ago, when, as with Alex, I lived down river from the Point, I started investigating my Moore roots and was fascinated by the stories of Col. John Moore and the way he was ridiculed for building the Red House. They called it Moore' folly before the revolt, but it was a refuge for the family during the war, and a home when Stephen inherited it. Now, in my dotage, I regret not ever finding Mt. Tirzah. I traveled west from Roanoke Rapids one day, but never got past the library in Oxford. I did get to see the two land grants from the king that formed the lands that Stephen inherited. They were in the West Point Cadet Library, and I was allowed to photograph them. Awesome. I would appreciate more information about the newly restored Moore Home at Mt. Tirzah. My other relative, of that era, Robert Dickins, must have lived nearby. His son, Jesse, married Stephens daughter, Francis, who was born at the Red House on the Hudson. There is a compelling argument put forth by Don Foster in his book of literary mysteries, "Author Unknown", that Col. Henry Livingston is really the author of the poem. I'm currently writing a history of Burlington and Elon and was just looking for additional tidbits for a section I was writing about Dr. Harris Royal Moore and his brothers Steve and Frank. (I grew up with Steve's grandchildren.) What I found most interesting about the article is that it mentioned my great, great, great-grandfather, Jacob Blane, of Halifax County, Virginia, who recalled seeing Richard Stanford on his way to meet up with Senator John Randolph. John Randolph was also one of my father's relatives on his mother's side. Sam Adams, who did so much Richard Stanford research, lived in Elon (where I grew up) for several years around the turn of the century. My maternal grandmother remembered him well and recalled that he donated several Richard Stanford items to the college's museum (which burned in 1923). Harris Moore came to the Burlington area in 1891 at the request of his cousin Bob Holt, who needed a physician in the Glencoe Mills area north of town. Steve came into Burlington a couple of years later.

Regards,
Walter BoydAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3972333218562933586.post-83638279308648435652011-06-06T18:29:30.356-04:002011-06-06T18:29:30.356-04:00This is the most complete piece I have encountered...This is the most complete piece I have encountered to date about our ancestor.
